“My child stopped saying his favorite word.”

Your child is learning new vocabulary everyday through everyday communication, watching tv, from peers, etc. BUT you begin to notice that your child is not consistently using this term or using it all anymore. So..what do you?

Well..this is actually fairly common and you are not alone. When children are learning new words, they will use that word ALL the time and then completely stop. Some common reasons why a child might stop using a word would be:

  • Learned another new word

  • Mastered a new skill (walking, climbing, etc)

  • Changes in sleep

HOWEVER, something you want to be sure is happening with your child's language skills is that they are continually learning new vocabulary, parts of language, etc. You want to see growth in them. If your child has learned multiple words and then never uses them again, be sure to mention that to your pediatrician.

These parts of speech and language that we might see growth in are:

  • Nouns

  • Pronouns

  • Actions/verbs

  • Adjectives

  • Prepositions

  • Opposites

As your child is growing and making these changes, do your best not to worry right away. It is important to understand the communicate milestones for your child's age and determine if they are meeting those milestones.

Things that you can do to help your child use the words that they are no longer using..? Modeling the word in everyday life. Repeat the word over and over so your child has plenty of exposure to the word.

As always, if you have concerns with your child's speech and language skills please reach out to me!
